23 August 2006 at 15:00, in the UN House, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will announce the winners of the “Children’s Rights in Kyrgyzstan” Media Contest.

The Contest which was initiated after the International Day of the Child (celebrated on the 1st of June 2006) invited journalists to submit their articles, TV and radio stories dedicating to children’s issues. It was called to stress that children need the journalists’ attention beyond just one day a year.

The organizers have received 25 entries from various media in Bishkek, Kara-Balta, Osh, Jalalabat, Batken on the Kyrgyz, Russian and English languages. Authors of the best 9 works will be presented awards.

The Contest had also another goal: to kick off the creation of a “Pro-Child Media Club”. The Contest winners are invited to become members of the Club as well as other journalists who are interested in increasing awareness of the situation of children in Kyrgyzstan. UNICEF plans to support the work of the Club, organize trainings for its members, finance thematic trips within the republic and provide wide range information on the state of children in Kyrgyzstan and globally.

Timothy Schaffter, UNICEF Representative, emphasizes a major role of media in attaining the realization of the children’s rights and commits to support initiatives of the journalists towards raising public awareness on priority issues concerning children.

After the awarding ceremony, the Club members will open the first meeting. They will discuss the work of the Club and develop a plan of action for the rest of the year.
