A hospital in Kosovo before the Baby Friendly Initiative

The explosion of conflict and the preceding years of neglect had devastated much of Kosovo’s health sector. Capacity has been depleted and key areas of child and maternal health management have been left isolated from the major advances elsewhere in the world. As Kosovo rebuilds it’s health services-gaps remain in basic surveillance systems of the major maternal and child health indicators-however, those statistics available show that children in Kosovo have one of the worst starts in life in Europe.

UNICEF is working to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Health to improve the health situation of children in Kosovo. Efforts are also being made to reach every household in Kosovo with knowledge and information on better parenting, safe motherhood and disease prevention.
