NAIROBI, Kenya,30 May 2013: UNICEF Kenya has announced the global launch of The State of World’s Children 2013 in an education dissemination forum focused on children with disabilities.
The event coincided with the Global launch in Viet Nam and was meant to spur discussions around the issues raised in the report as a build-up to a local launch in Nairobi.
The forum, which was organised by Safaricom Foundation, had participants from the government, civil society, private sector and the United Nations
Speaking at the event, Mr Nzioka Waita, the trustee of the Safaricom Foundation urged an inclusive approach to child education. “To deliver a holistic education we need to have an equity perspective and linkages to the factors affecting children including disabilities” said he.
During the event, partners shared their contributions towards supporting the education of children with disabilities particularly through the use of technology. It was pointed out that the use of ICT in education was a good opportunity to the equity issue.
“With technology, children with disabilities will have a chance to be at par with their counterparts” said Ms Margaret Murage, a Director in the Ministry of education.
In the coming weeks, partners, in conjunction with UNICEF Kenya will commission the report and disseminate it to all key players and stakeholders.
