BREDS Opens Innovative Challenge Course
KINGSTON, 27 September, 2013 – BREDS/The Treasure Beach Foundation has launched a unique outdoor challenge course designed to build resilience and leadership skills for youth.
The General Colin Powell Challenge Course takes participants through a series of physical and mental challenges, under the supervision of trained facilitators.
The Course primarily targets young people who are at risk or already dealing with substance abuse, criminal behavior and other difficulties. It will also serve young people from more regular circumstances, including those with leadership potential.
It will form one part of broader efforts by partner institutions who work with young people in vulnerable circumstances, including RISE Life Management Services and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
BREDS developed the course with funding support from UNICEF and the Ric Ohrstrom Foundation. It was constructed with support from the Engineer Regiment of the JDF and the Jamaica Public Service.
Young people in Treasure Beach and surrounding areas, as well as urban communities across the island, will use the course.
“The Challenge Course is a new way for us to help build future leaders,” said Jason Henzell, Chairman of BREDS, at the grand opening on Friday, September 27. “Participants get to face their fears and anxieties, in a safe environment with supportive guides, while learning critical skills such as team work, discipline and decision-making.”
The course has six structures low to the ground that participants approach and complete as a team, and culminates with a 65-foot high ropes wall and zip line.
Training in therapeutic and facility operation safety for a local cadre of facilitators was provided by C4 Recovery, an international NGO, with support from the 4 Circles Adolescent Treatment Center and Challenge Towers.
4 Circles provides a sustainable recovery programme for young adults with substance abuse and addiction problems. Challenge Towers is a leading builder and consultant in the operations of ropes course facilities.
