Tivoli: First Stop for ‘Talk Up Yout’ School Tour
KINGSTON, 13 September 2013 – Students at Tivoli Gardens High will be the first to speak their minds on the ‘Talk Up Yout’ school tour that kicks off today.
The all-island school tour is an extension of the ‘Talk Up Yout’ TV programme created and hosted by Emprezz Golding.
The unique programme gives young people a space to air their feelings and concerns on various issues, and directs them to counseling and other services for professional help.
At each school, grade 7-11 student representatives will lead a panel discussion, moderated by Emprezz, focused on young people’s solutions for pressing challenges.
An audience of at least 200 students will participate, along with representatives of the National Centre for Youth Development and the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network.
Excerpts of the panel discussions will be aired in ‘webisodes’ shared online.
Special guest artistes with positive messages will perform at each school visit. Agent Sasco and dub poet ‘Steppa’ will provide edutainment at the first session in Tivoli.
“My aim is to meet with youth all across Jamaica face-to-face and give them a chance to share their ideas, ask questions of experts and find the solutions to all their issues, parish by parish, school by school,” said Emprezz.
“With only three episodes left this season, the ‘Talk Up Yout’ movement continues in another format,” she said. “The school tour is another way for youth to feel less isolated as they work on their issues, to listen to other perspectives and to get help.”
Novia Condell-Gibson, UNICEF’s Adolescent Health and Empowerment Specialist, said UNICEF is excited about the visits. “This is a great opportunity to engage young people across Jamaica on issues they care about, and to hear how they want to address them.”
Season 3 of ‘Talk Up Yout’ airs on TVJ on Tuesdays at 6 pm, and repeats on Saturdays at 5:30 pm.
