Skills for Life: HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health Education for young people with learning disabilities
On Tuesday, 1 November, 2005 some 20,000 Jamaican young people with learning disabilities joined the Global Campaign on Children and AIDS with the official launch of the "Skills for Life" programme by 3D Projects Limited Projects (Dedicated to the Development of Persons with Disabilities), an NGO based in Spanish Town, Jamaica. The "Skills for Life" Programme which is being funded by UNICEF seeks to bring about positive behaviours to reduce vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, abuse or exploitation among intellectually challenged young persons by helping them to become more self-reliant. It involves the use of a resource package consisting of a facilitators guide, an activity work packet, six short videos and four posters. There are many HIV/AIDS or sex education publications and programmes in Jamaica , but very few of these resources have been developed for young people who are intellectually challenged.
Resource package can be obtained from 3D Projects, Spanish Town.
