UNICEF supports the Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works to improve access to safe water and sanitation services, including:

  • As part of the Iraq-Public Sector Modernization Programme, the development of a functional review of the sector including a water and sanitation service delivery model, costing study and road map;
  • Development and implementation of Solid Waste Management Master Plans in six governorates - Anbar, Basra, Dohuk, Erbil, Sulaimaniya and Thiq Qar;
  • Development and implementation of Water and Sanitation Master Plan in Missan  governorate;
  • Rehabilitation of water networks benefitting over 200,000 deprived people;
  • Rehabilitating water and sanitation facilities in 200 schools;
  • Procurement of solar powered water treatment units for local governments;
  • Completion of an environmental survey on the state of water, sanitation and municipal services in Iraq

States parties shall combat disease and malnutrition through, (…) the provision of  (…) clean drinking water.

States are to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all.
