UNICEF supports the Ministry of Education to improve access to quality education, including:

With the World Bank and UNESCO, develop and implement a National Education Strategy to improve quality education from pre-school to Grade 12;
As part of the Iraq-Public Sector Modernization Programme, the development of a functional review of the sector including an education service delivery model, costing study and road map;
Implementing a Child Friendly Schools strategy to ensure primary schools adopt minimum standards that enable children to learn in a healthy and happy environment. Child-friendly school standards are being adopted in hundreds of pilot schools across Iraq’s 18 governorates with plans to expand to more schools;
Development of quality teaching standards for teachers;
Implementing an Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) that is enabling over 60,000 children who have missed out on primary school to catch up with their primary education;
With UNESCO, developing recommendations to increase pre-school enrolment rates to ensure the best academic, social and psychological start for children across Iraq.

Convention on the Rights of the Child

States Parties recognize the right of the child to education and will make primary education compulsory and available free to all, make secondary education available and accessible to every child and encourage regular attendance at schools and the reduction of drop-out rates.
