UNICEF statement welcoming the appointment of Special Representative of the SG on Violence Against ChildrenNew York, 1 May 2009 - UNICEF welcomes the announcement today by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon of the appointment of Marta Santos Pais as his Special Representative on Violence Against Children.
This establishment of this important new position is a testimony to the seriousness with which the United Nations system takes violations of the rights and threats to the well-being of children.
UNICEF looks forward to working closely with the new Special Representative to address the scourge of violence against children, and congratulates Ms. Santos Pais, former head of the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre, on her new appointment.
