A drawing by an Iranian schoolgirl has been chosen as the design for the front cover of UNICEF Iran’s booklet on the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC). Somaye Farahani’s drawing, which depicts a colourful scene of flags and people from different nationalities, was selected for its positive image and fresh appeal.

It has several articles from the Convention written on it too, including “We have the right to live in peace” and “Children from every nationality, race and religion are equal.”

A cloud next to a UN building says. “Children have the right to get to know the culture of other countries and work with each other to promote peace and friendship.”

Somaye, 11 years old, from Hazrat-e Zahra Primary School in south Tehran came to UNICEF’s Information Resource Centre with her school in November 2005. She drew the picture after learning about the CRC and the role of UNICEF in the world.

“We decided we wanted the book containing the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child to have an Iranian design,” said Miranda Eeles, UNICEF’s Communication Officer. “It was a difficult decision to make because we receive so many excellent drawings by children who come and visit our Information Resource Centre. We eventually chose Somaye’s because of its colourful design and her ability to cover a range of articles from the CRC.”

Every week, children from schools all over Tehran visit the Information Resource Centre. They are given presentations on subjects related to UNICEF’s work and watch a short video of cartoons based on the CRC.
