UNICEF's major contributions to the polio eradication initiative range from the supply of vaccines and cold chain equipment to support for management, training, advocacy, social mobilization, and the development of disease surveillance within the primary health care system. A large proportion of the massive quantities of polio vaccine and cold-chain logistics needed both for routine polio immunization and for mass campaigns in the endemic countries is supplied through UNICEF.

UNICEF also provides practical support to enable countries to forecast their vaccine needs more accurately and to become self-sufficient in vaccine supply. UNICEF supports national governments to build capacity to strengthen immunization programs within the context of primary health care.

In Afghanistan, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, Sudan, DR Congo and elsewhere, UNICEF has played a key role in helping to negotiate a series of ceasefires to immunize children trapped in conflict zones.
