Through its PolioPlus program, established in 1985, Rotary International continues to play a crucial role in global efforts to eradicate polio. Rotary is the world's first service organization with a global network of 1.2 million members in 163 countries. More than one million Rotary members have volunteered their time and personal resources to the success of polio eradication efforts. In addition, Rotary mobilizes millions of fellow volunteers to assist during national immunization days.

Rotary has also provided urgently needed funds - to date, the organization has contributed US$ 378 million to polio eradication. By the end of 2005, Rotary's financial commitment will be approximately US$ 500 million. In addition, Rotary's Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force has played a major role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over US$900 million to the effort.

This year, in an effort to help close the funding gap, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and the United Nations Foundation are collaborating in a joint appeal to the private sector to raise funds for polio eradication needs.
