Provisional Agenda
A Pledge to Certify the World As Polio-Free by 2005

The world has the knowledge, resources and capacity to eradicate polio by 2005, ending forever the threat of disability this disease poses to millions of people. Eradication is within our reach, and we who are gathered here at the United Nations today, the 27th of September 2000, fully commit ourselves to this moral and historic imperative. We pledge to overcome all remaining obstacles and achieve a polio-free world.

With one voice, we urge friends and partners everywhere to join us at this important juncture, to guarantee their full and tireless commitment to the implementation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strategic Plan 2001-2005, so that by 2005 the world can be certified polio-free.

We pledge

  • To find the US $450 million still needed (of a total US $1 billion) to enable the world to completely halt poliovirus transmission within the next 24 months, and to certify a polio-free world in the year 2005;
  • To reach 600 million more children with polio vaccine, wherever they may live, despite distance and difficulties, and
  • To advocate at the highest levels to attain the political commitment required worldwide to accomplish the goal.

We call

  • Upon every United Nations Member State fully to reaffirm their commitment to eradicate polio and to implement the Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strategic Plan 2001- 2005;
  • Upon new private sector partners and donors to join and strengthen the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and,
  • Upon the media to make a crucial contribution by keeping in the world's view both the triumphs and the remaining challenges to achieving a polio-free world.

We are

  • National Governments, committed to implementing all necessary polio eradication activities and allocating funds to this end;
  • Donors and funding organizations, committed to securing the required financial support through 2005;
  • Non-governmental organizations, committed to providing on-the-ground support needed to reach all children;
  • Vaccine producers, committed to ensuring the global supply of oral polio vaccine;
  • Foundations and corporations, committed to contributing financial support and in-kind donations;
  • Individuals, committed to advocating for the Polio Eradication Initiative, and to volunteering the time to ensure that every child under five is vaccinated against polio, and,
  • The United Nations family of international organizations, committed to using all instruments at our disposal to champion this cause and reach every child with polio vaccine.

We affirm
That working together, we will certify the world polio-free in 2005 - a lasting gift to future generations.
