Ms Carol Bellamy

UNICEF Executive Director Ms Carol Bellamy recently returned from a
three-day visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo this August, taking
part in a major immunization campaign crucial to eradicating polio.
Ms Bellamy has been actively involved in the negotiation of "Days
of Tranquility" in various countries to ensure immunization of
children in conflict areas.
Ms Carol Bellamy was born on 14 January 1942. She graduated from Gettysburg
College and graduated in law from New York University. She is a former
Fellow of the Institute of Politics of the Kennedy School of Government
at Harvard University.
Ms Bellamy has worked extensively in the public sector, including five
years in the New York State Senate (1973-1977). In 1978, she became
the first woman President of the New York City Council, serving until
1985. She was a principal at Morgan Stanley and Co. from 1986 to 1990
and served as a managing director of Bear Stearns & Co. from 1990
to 1993. Prior to joining UNICEF, Ms Bellamy was Director of the United
States Peace Corps.
Ms Bellamy assumed office as Executive Director of UNICEF, with the
rank of Under Secretary General, on 1 May 1995 and has been re-appointed
to a second term effective May 2000-April 2005.
