| Sri Lankan children are getting back to school after the tsunami |
NEW YORK, 15 March, 2005 - Sri Lanka is one of the countries that was most devastated by the tsunami of 26 December, 2004. Not so much for the numbers killed but because more than half of its entire coastline was badly hit – all the way from the southwest to the northeast tip.
It’s also unique in that the northeast part of the island is controlled by a rebel army, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE. This means that organizations wanting to help must work with the government and also the LTTE administration.
Three months after the tsunami struck, UNICEF’s Senior Producer Dan Thomas visited Sri Lanka to see the relief effort and find out how UNICEF was making a difference in the lives of children and families. Click here to hear his Radio Diary of the trip, produced by UNICEF Radio’s Blue Chevigny.
