MADRID, Spain, 23 June 2006 – UNICEF’s Spanish National Committee launched its UNITE FOR CHILDREN  UNITE AGAINST AIDS campaign yesterday with the help of international superstar and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira.

From a giant screen in front of thousands of screaming fans, the Colombian singer spoke about the devastating impact of AIDS on children in a video message she recorded earlier this year at UNICEF headquarters in New York. Shakira stressed the importance of educating young people about HIV/AIDS.

“Did you know that knowledge is the key to stopping the spread of AIDS?” she asked. “Yet millions of children are missing an education. AIDS is one reason why: Missing their teachers who have died of the disease. Missing from class as they stay at home to care for their dying mothers and fathers. Children are missing your support.

“Unite for children. Unite against AIDS,” she concluded.

Supporting the campaign

Shakira’s message will be shown at another concert she is performing today here in the Spanish capital and at all the other performances on her current tour of Spain. The tour takes her to Pamplona, Barcelona, Malaga, Elche (Alicante) and Las Palmas, and winds up in Tenerife on 5 July.

The video message also contains information on how fans can contribute to the campaign via text messages and through the Spanish Committee campaign website. At every stop on the concert tour, UNICEF volunteers will hand out campaign leaflets.

The Spanish National Committee for UNICEF plans to raise 2.5 million euros for the UNITE FOR CHILDREN  UNITE AGAINST AIDS campaign in 2006 and a total of 12 million euros by 2010.
