| Happy woman and children. Though the maternal mortality rates in Somalia are among the highest in the world, UNICEF through its health programme seeks to ensure a brighter future for mothers and children like these in the picture taken in 2001. |
23 April 2004 -- The brand new UNICEF Somalia website, produced entirely in the region by staff from the UNICEF Somalia office, is launching today. The website provides insights into the lives of Somali children and into the ongoing work of UNICEF in Somalia, highlighting one of the most interesting, and toughest, environments anywhere in the world.
The site reports on remarkable successes won amidst the still-dangerous conditions that prevail in the country—successes such as stopping polio in Somalia, or the story of the ‘Youth Broadcasting Initiative’ in which Somali young people received training in producing their own video and radio programmes via a UNICEF-supported project.
Also available on the site are monthly reports on events in Somalia, both triumphant and tragic, an overview of what life is like for a Somali child at each of three life stages, and detailed descriptions of UNICEF’s work in Somalia. The site is illustrated with photos from areas all around the country.
