Gaza children go back to school with UNICEF bags

NEW YORK, 28 October 2004 – UNICEF has distributed more than 40,000 school bags to children in the Northern Gaza Strip.
The 500 students at the Rawdet Tal Zaatar Kindergarten whose school was severely damaged during a recent military incursion by Israeli armed forces were among the first students to receive the UNICEF school bags.
“The school bags are a token of support that give a sense of normalcy in the lives of children, a sense of no matter the circumstance, education must continue” said the UNICEF Representative for the occupied Palestinian territory, Dan Rohrmann. “Children’s right to education must be upheld.”
Aside from providing bags, UNICEF is helping children to continue their studies during the conflict by providing counselling as well as supplementary educational materials.
The two week military offensive left about 34 children dead and at least 170 wounded.
