UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake visits Nepal

KATHMANDU, 10 January 2012 - UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake will arrive in Kathmandu to begin a two-day mission to Nepal from 11 January 2012. 

While in Nepal, Mr. Lake will visit community-based programmes to see the difficulties faced by children and women in urban and rural parts of the country. He will be observing the work that the community and the government is doing to ensure the well-being of Nepali children. He will meet with the children at one of the many UNICEF-supported Urban-Out-of-School programmes where working children have a chance to gain an education.  He will also meet visit Child Clubs members, Community Organisations, Paralegal Committee members and Female Community Health Volunteers.

Mr. Lake will meet the Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance and the Vice-Chair of National Planning Commission to discuss opportunities to work together to further reduce deprivations among children in hard to reach and marginalized areas. He will also be meeting with the Secretary General of SAARC.

Mr Lake is an American citizen who became the sixth Executive Director of UNICEF on 1 May 2010, bringing with him more than 45 years of public service experience at the highest echelons of government and in international service. His visit is only the third ever made to Nepal by an Executive Director of UNICEF.
