Japan promotes Global Handwashing Day for better hygiene
TOKYO, Japan, 15 October 2009 – Today, millions of children and adults in over 80 countries are marking the second annual Global Handwashing Day with special events and activities. As part of this effort, the Japan Committee for UNICEF and its partners have launched a project to promote handwashing among children in Japan and around the world.

DAKAR, Senegal, 5 April 2005 – In Guédiawaye, a neighbourhood on the poverty-stricken outskirts of Dakar, pupils at the Ndiarème B Primary School are getting ready for a special project. They’re crowding around a white canvas flag - coloured pens in hand - ready to cover it with messages to children in Japan. Among them is a little girl in a pink shirt, brandishing a hot pink pen. NEW YORK, 12 January 2005 - The government of Japan has allocated seventy million dollars to UNICEF to assist in the tsunami relief effort. Japanese Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shuzen Tanigawa announced that his government would donate 250 million dollars to international aid organisations for immediate emergency relief. It is part of Japan’s total aid package of 500 million dollars to tsunami-hit countries.

TOKYO, 26 October 2004 – The Japanese government today made a donation of $3.5 million in response to the deepening crisis in the Darfur region.
