HONG KONG, 29 December 2004 – UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jackie Chan has made a personal donation of a half million Hong Kong dollars - about US$64,000 – to UNICEF to aid in tsunami relief efforts.

His gift was matched by the New World Group, a corporate partner of the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF.

Massive waves smashed into coastal areas in South Asia and Africa this weekend, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing many more. Children account for a large proportion of casualties because they represent 39 per cent of the overall population in the eight most affected countries.

UNICEF is rushing assistance to those most affected by the disaster, providing shelter, safe water, medical supplies and other essentials to stricken countries.

UNICEF Hong Kong has launched a territory-wide fundraising campaign to assist victims of the disaster.

After the ceremonies, the Hong Kong movie star recorded a multilingual appeal to his millions of fans around the world to join him in supporting UNICEF’s relief efforts across the region.
