Botswana wireless company supports UNICEF efforts for orphaned children

GABORONE, Botswana, 30 June 2006 – Hot on the heels of the launch of the UNITE FOR CHILDREN UNITE AGAINST AIDS campaign here last month, Botswana’s primary mobile telephone company, Mascom Wireless, has donated $127,000 to UNICEF orphan care projects.
The contribution was announced to members of the media in mid-June at the Botswana Television Auditorium.
“This is our response to the call to action from the United Nations agency for children,” said Mascom CEO José A. Ferreira. “We chose UNICEF to help us to invest because we are investing in the future of this country, and this is a contribution to a better future.”
Providing care and protection
In Botswana, 53,200 orphans are registered and receiving support from the government. However, many orphans and vulnerable children still require care and protection. Traditionally, extended families were able to provide support to orphans, but their capacities are now limited by the magnitude of the problem.
The Mascom donation to UNICEF will be used to reach out to orphaned children in need.
“The contribution from Mascom will be used to support our key community-based initiatives with financial assistance, technical expertise, supplies and equipment to ensure that these children have the best start in life,” said UNICEF Representative in Botswana Gordon Jonathan Lewis.
This is the second time Mascom has donated to UNICEF orphan care projects, making the company a key local partner from the private sector to have joined forces for children with UNICEF.
