Andorra helps UNICEF accelerate girls' education in Eritrea

NEW YORK, 11 February 2005 – Foreign Minister of the Principality of Andorra Mr. Juli Minoves-Triquell today visited UNICEF to discuss the government’s relationship with UNICEF and to present a cheque for $16,834 to Deputy Executive Director Kul Gautam.

“The contribution this time is for the second phase of the programme ‘Accelerating Girls’ Education in Eritrea,’” says Mr. Minoves-Triquell. Andorra has already donated more than $50,000 to UNICEF’s work on girls’ education in Eritrea during 2003.

“We have a lot of other programmes that we support UNICEF with, particularly in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have a big programme for which Andorra is contributing about one million dollars for 3 years. The programme aims to help teach children to learn about democracy and human rights,” adds Mr. Minoves-Triquell.

Andorra is a small country located in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains in Europe with a population of less than 70,000 people. It ranks in the top five countries in terms of per capita donations to UNICEF.

“UNICEF is well run. It’s an organisation that gets things done, gets the aid where it need to go. Helping children means helping the society tomorrow. I think it’s very worthwhile,” says Mr. Minoves-Triquell.

Looking at the future, Mr. Minoves-Triquell stresses that his country will give UNICEF its continuous support. “We are now the fourth contributor in terms of per capita to UNICEF in the world and we would like to get a little bit higher on the list. I think it’s a good goal. As much as we can help, we will!” says Mr. Minoves-Triquell.
