Child-Friendly Toilets at Ende Island Schools
Schoolchildren on Ende Island now have access to good sanitation facilities thanks to the completion of ‘child-friendly’ toilet blocks at a number of the island’s schools.

Throughout July, six toilet units were completed, with construction taking about two months for each. Chief of UNICEF Operational Activities in the Ende Education Agency, Venansius Minggu, said the toilets are built with children in mind. “The design is focused at child convenience so that is why we call it a child-friendly toilet,” said Venansius, proudly displaying photos of the construction process.

Before the toilets are opened for use, the schools must meet some important conditions. They must teach their students how to use the toilets and their functions, and involve them in maintaining cleanliness. The schools must also allocate some maintenance funds from their school budgets to ensure the toilets are kept in good condition.

Usman, a fifth grader of Ekoreko State Elementary, said he was very happy with the toilet. “The sink is reachable, not too high for me and my friends to wash our hands,” he said to a chorus of agreement from his friends. “We did not have to run to the beach whenever nature calls now,” said 11 year-old Usman.
