P&G, UNICEF and Sukabumi Regency Join Forces to Improve Early Childhood Education

P&G Indonesia Director Raul Falcon (2nd from left) with Sukabumi Regent Drs. H. Sukmawijaya (t3rd from L) and UNICEF fundraising chief Liem Ay Ling (center) at the Taman Posyandu inauguration ceremony.

Ten ‘Taman Posyandu’ (integrated health service clinics for mothers and children) in two districts of Sukabumi Regency, West Java, received assistance from P&G Indonesia and UNICEF to upgrade their early childhood education services. The aid will be provided for a two-year period.

The program, called ‘Balita Cerdas,’ or Smart Toddlers, is part of UNICEF and the Indonesian government’s support for early childhood education across all administrative levels, an initiative that began in 2006.

Activities included in the program are advocacy, socialization, people’s health needs survey, training for health workers and education for parents, supplying teaching and learning tools, supervision and monitoring.

Darius Sinathrya, star of P&G ‚s product ads, reads a story to toddlers at the Taman Posyandu inauguration ceremony.

The cooperation between P&G, UNICEF and Sukabumi is the first to equip a Posyandu not just for its usual role of providing health services and early childhood education but also as a community center. It is anticipated that this model, if successful, can be replicated in other Regencies across West Java as well as in other provinces.
