UNICEF gravely concerned at attacks on schoolchildren in Madura, Indonesia
Jakarta, 27 August 2012. UNICEF expresses its deepest concerns today at reports of a violent incident on Sunday involving children returning to their boarding school in Madura, East Java in Indonesia.
All children should be assured of full protection from violence, discrimination or other forms of mistreatment at all times and never be prevented from exercising their fundamental rights to education or any other service.
There is no excuse for violence against children, and actions that put children at risk are unacceptable in any society.
UNICEF calls upon community and civic leaders to condemn intimidation, threats or actual violence against children anywhere in Indonesia and to ensure that every child is protected from harm.
