UNICEF Indonesia is working closely with other UN agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Government of Indonesia and other partners in bringing the H5N1 virus under control and preventing a human influenza pandemic.

UNICEF is particularly focused on communications activities that raise public awareness about bird flu and inform people about how to effectively stop transmission of the disease in animals and humans.

Together with UN partners and the Government of Indonesia, UNICEF launched the Tanggap Flu Burung (“Take Action on Bird Flu”) Campaign in September 2006. This campaign included TV and Radio ads, free public concerts, and billboards, leaflets and other materials. The campaign has reached millions of people in Indonesian with critical information. UNICEF is also implementing a range of new ‘Take Action’ materials and activities, including a new public awareness program aimed at school-age children that includes games, an animated film and TV ads for kids.

In 2007, UNICEF Indonesia and the National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Preparedness (Komnas FBPI) launched a Tanggap Flu Burung village campaign, promoting the use of Avian Influenza Kits among heads of hamlets or villages in 100,000 villages nationwide. The kits consist of protection equipment such as masks and gloves as well as communication materials (Video Discs, booklet, stickers and pamphlets) to help village heads promote bird flu awareness among their fellow villagers.

UNICEF is currently expanding its Sekolahku Tanggap Flu Burung drive, which kicked off late last year, to over 50,000 schools across Indonesia. Educational kits for pupils have been distributed to support the activity. The kits include a comic book starring the characters of a popular Indonesian television show, Bajaj Bajuri, along with other fun and educational materials for kids.  Through 2009, UNICEF will also be rolling our a radio drama series, new Public Service Announcements, a booklet for religious leaders and other media activities.

All of these awareness activities are carried out in support of UNICEF’s bird flu action plan - a social mobilization campaign that includes training thousands of bird flu educators and getting millions more people in rural communities directly involved in the fight against bird flu. In support of the social mobilization campaign, UNICEF is distributing promotional material to thousands of villages in high-risk areas, working with community and religious leaders as well as women’s groups.

In addition to the mass media campaign, UNICEF works closely with the government to support media relations and communications at Komnas FBPI - the coordinating agency for avian influenza and pandemic preparedness. UNICEF also conducts journalist training to improve the quality and quantity of news reporting on bird flu.

Finally, UNICEF is closely involved in the development of pandemic preparedness planning in Indonesia.  This includes developing communication materials in the event of a pandemic and supporting the government in the preparation of the National Pandemic Preparedness plan. UNICEF is also working to raise awareness of the threat in schools, communities and the private sector. The goal is to ensure that by providing information they will be better prepared if this or any other virus becomes a global threat.
