Recommendations for Strengthening Skills and Competencies of ASHAs – Consultation Report UNICEF had organized a two day consultation on Strengthening Skills and Competencies of ASHAs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and National Health Systems Resource Center in January 2013. This report captures the consultation proceedings and recommendations for identifying needs and to strengthen the skills and competencies of ASHAs with emphasis on interpersonal communication and community mobilization. Coverage Evaluation Survey Report 2009 The Coverage Evaluation Survey 2009 (CES-2009), a nationwide survey covering all States and Union Territories of India, was conducted during November 2009 to January 2010. About 10 per cent of infants and 14 per cent of 0-4-year children die due to diarrhoea in India. In the last decade, two technical advances have further improved the survival of children suffering from diarrhoea: 1) introduction of low osmolarity oral rehydration salt (ORS) and 2) zinc therapy. Immunization is one of the most cost effective intervention know to decrease disease morbidity and mortality. Availability of appropriate and accurate information about immunization coverage levels among all children and selected group, status and quality of immunization services, and bottlenecks to improving coverage levels are crucial to developing and implementing effective strategies for improving immunization coverage. Large scale periodic outbreaks have been reported in epidemic forms in India since the past four decades. Measles Morality Reduction Plan 2005-10 High measles mortality occurs every year in India particularly in states with poor routine immunization coverage. Government of India has developed a measles mortality reduction plan with the aim to reduce measles mortality by 2/3rd from the baseline by 2010. The report reflected the cold chain infrastructure of the country and gaps in terms of infrastructure and human resources with net requirements to adequately support the routine immunization program. The report can be downloaded in PDF format. Download Full Report Orissa State in India conducted Vaccine Management Assessment and Training of 26 health department staff in December 2007. The assessment and training covered state vaccine store, 6 regions, 12 districts and 30 blocks. The assessment was done using the tool called VMAT (Vaccine Management Assessment Training tool) jointly developed by WHO-UNICEF.
