Strategic partnership with RedR
In order to enhance its technical and operational capacity in responding to emergencies, UNICEF signed an agreement with RedR India in 2007 to provide specialist and multi-sectoral support in emergencies across the country.
RedR India is part of RedR International network and a humanitarian, independent voluntary organisation with an executive committee composed of persons having a long track record in the field of disaster response, disaster preparedness, rural development, training and humanitarian work.
The principal aim of the partnership is to improve technical and operational capacity of UNICEF and key government and NGO counterparts’ staff engaged in disaster management. Under the agreement, RedR will provide training in three key categories:
(1) Assessment and monitoring
Two such trainings have already been successfully conducted for UNICEF staff and NGO and government counterparts.
RedR will work with UNICEF at the national and state levels to develop relevant, specific and realistic emergency preparedness and response plans. It will also help UNICEF in developing effective monitoring systems in emergencies, specifically end-user monitoring.
The agreement also establishes a mechanism for UNICEF to contact RedR to undertake specific tasks through a “Call Down” contract. This means allowing for immediate deployment of pre-screened experts across the country for assessments, training, monitoring and evaluation.
This strategic partnership with RedR has immense potential to complement UNICEF’s resources in the field in responding to emergencies in India.
