March 7, 2007 : Government of Haryana and UNICEF ink MOU to improve the lives women and children

6 March 2007, New Delhi:  The government of Haryana and UNICEF India signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Delhi on Tuesday to work together to improve social indicators for women and children in the state.

Haryana has high rates of economic growth and per capital income, but suffers from one of the lowest sex ratios in the country. Under-age marriage and female foeticide are also significant issues affecting women and children.

Under the terms of the MOU, UNICEF will provide evidence of what works including global best practices in meeting some of the challenges faced by the state. The areas of cooperation are, inter-alia:

• Behaviour development and behaviour change communication across key social sectors

• Undertake a review of the SMS programme and follow-up on implementation at community level.

• Participate in inter-sectoral review meetings and support GoH in addressing key social priorities by providing technical inputs and sharing global best practices.

• Launch the State of the World’s Children report every year in Haryana to highlight developments around children.

• Formulate a multi-pronged strategy to address female foeticide in the state.

• Orientation and capacity building of civil servants, legislators and the media on issues affecting the well-being of women and children in Haryana, including training of frontline workers who work with children.

• Undertake a situation analysis of women and children in Haryana and monitoring of the Child Rights Convention and the 11th Five Year Plan around children.
