Chantara and Laluanglad have no way of communicating with the villagers to warn them of their visit and so the first thing they do upon arrival is find Headman Bountham to explain why they have come. The Luang Namtha region is populated by 14 different ethnic minorities, each of which has its own language, which can further complicate communication. In Nam Chang, Headman Bountham’s support and involvement is vital because he is one of the few villagers who speaks Lao. Once he is firmly committed to the immunization process, Headman Bountham rings the village bell to call the women and children together. They bring their vaccination cards with them.
