The vaccines need to be kept between 0 and 8 °C, so getting them from the warehouse in the capital Vientiane, to the district health offices and then to the villages at the proper temperature is a considerable feat. Vaccines are flown in, distributed via truck, car, motorbike, tak-tak and bicycle and finally delivered on foot. Vaccinators have to carry heavy cold boxes and sterilization equipment as they hike the last part of the journey because most of the villages are far from the nearest road.
