Albania, 1999

By the end of May 1999, over a two-month period, some 718,000 ethnic Albanian refugees, the majority children, woman and the elderly, fled the province of Kosovo in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for neighbouring countries: 442,400 to Albania, 249,000 to former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 67,600 to Montenegro and 21,700 to Bosnia and Herzegovina.  UNICEF’s cooperation programme supported increased immunization coverage.
