Office de Radiodiffusion et télévision du Bénin (ORTB)
Office de Radiodiffusion et télévision du Bénin (ORTB) is a string of public service stations, both television and radio, that operates nationwide. It offers programmes on politics, environment, health and media coverage with a special programme for children on the radio. Subsidiaries are ORTB National Television, Radio Benin, Radio Parakou, Atlantic FM and several other local radio stations.
ORTB is in partnership with several UN agencies, with whom it has worked regularly for years. Primarily, there is a partnership with UNICEF that all UNICEF’s events are systematically covered.
For its ICDB activity, ORTB produced a special thirteen-minute children’s show called “When Children Speak.” In it, a child wonders what boys and girls are and asks her friends their opinions. Then she travels to the local village of SOS Calavi Abomey to talk to children about their outlooks on girls and boys.
Approach to Children and Children's Programming
The production of children's programming is done in Goun language and French.
The shows operate through a participatory approach where producers are directly involved in the issues. The themes are varied in relation to the Beninese children, their lives and their environment. ORTB is present at all the events that talk about children. On television, there is a children's programme every Wednesday afternoon. In the upcoming station schedule, there will be a weekly children's radio show in French.
