The first ever accredited Certificate programmes for Early Child Development (ECD) Practitioners and Assessors in Guyana concluded on Saturday November 5, 2011.  This was on made possible by the sustained strategic partnership with UNICEF Guyana, the University of Guyana and the University of the West Indies, Open Campus in Trinidad and Tobago.  Guyana can now proudly refer to its ECD practitioners as certified and with the requisite qualification within the CARICOM ECD framework. This comprehensive programme for ECD practitioners includes an eight month practicum and a module on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The programme comprises two certificate courses:-

  • Level 1 – a 21 credit course is designed to provide ECD practitioners with a broad base of knowledge, practical skills and attitudes which are foundational and are required for obtaining/performing entry level jobs within child care provision settings.
  • Level 11 – a 24 credit course is designed to provide practitioners with practical competencies and attitudes which demand greater involvement/complexity and allows for greater responsibility and autonomy for the children in their care.

The programme provides competencies needed for advancement into higher level training programmes in the area of early childhood and persons who successfully complete this programme will be eligible for entry into the Associate Degree programme

UNICEF-Guyana’s goal is to support the GoG to create ECD environments that offer opportunities for young children to play, explore, discover, experiment, problem-solve, make friends and develop self-confidence in a safe, secure and stimulating atmosphere.
