The Catalyst for Education and Gender Equality is a resource for academics worldwide on issues of education, gender equality and development. Six times yearly, the Catalyst looks to bridge gaps between development education research and experience, theory and practice, by convening scholars from across the world, development practitioners, advocates, activists and – most importantly – children themselves to explore themes relevant to the realization of gender equality in education.
Issue 1, September 2007: Empowerment through Girls' Education
This inaugural issue of the Catalyst features an essay on the alignment of human rights and economic growth in education; a profile of University of Oxford Social Anthropologist Jason Hart’s work on listening to children’s voices; a discussion of Rwanda’s successful approach to gender and education 13 years on from genocide; an update from Afghanistan on the education sector under attack; an overview of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative; plus girls from Nepal and DRC in their own words, a literature review, academic news and notes and a Parting Glance from the Palestinian Occupied Territory.
Issue 2, November 2007: Education in Emergencies and Post-Crisis Transition Countries
This issue of Catalyst offers a wide-ranging survey of Education in Emergencies and Post-Crisis Transition Countries. A feature esaay lays out the reasoning that underpins this important and emerging strain in human rights and development work. An expanded “Voices from the Field” section focuses on the challenges and triumphs of education in wartime Iraq; education as an early peace dividend, as described by UNICEF Southern Sudan Education Chief Sibeso Luswata; and a discussion of the fragility of progress in Afghanistan. Interviews with children of conflict reveal the toll of violence on the young; Tufts University’s Dyan Mazurana talks about gender, conflict and education; plus back to school for displaced girls in Uganda; disaster preparedness and risk reduction in the Philippines school system; our select resource review, academic news and notes and a Parting Glance from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
