Children read an exercise book

Two girls, (left-right) Petronella, 8, and Eustice, 19, read an exercise book together, seated in the small, one-room wooden shelter they call home, in Highfield, a densely populated suburb of Harare, the capital. The household is headed by Eustice, who cares for herself, her two siblings and her older sister's three children. Eustice's parents and her older sister died of AIDS. The family receives food from Mashambanzou, a local NGO, and money for school fees from the UNICEF-supported Child Protection Society of the Ministry of Social Affairs. Both organizations help to find homes for orphans and abandoned children through a foster care and adoption programme. Mashambanzou means 'dawn of a new day' in Shona, one of the country's main languages.
