A pan-Caucasus Television Program "Our Express" produced by young journalists has no analogue on Post Soviet TV Market

TBILISI. 21 January. 2005. A pan-Caucasus Television Program "Our Express" will be launched today on 21 January at 4p.m. on the 1st channel of the Georgian Public TV. The programme is produced by young people of age 14-17 from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the support of the Internews Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The project is being implemented with the financial support from USAID and UNICEF.

The TV Program will be broadcasted once in two weeks on national languages. A pan-Caucasus Television Program "Our Express" has no analogue on Post Soviet TV Market.

Young journalists were selected in 2004 as a result of the open contest and then the training organized by Internews Georgia with the support of UNICEF and USAID. As a result of the training, six participants were selected in Georgia for further involvement into the TV programmes.  Young journalists together with their peers from Azerbaijan and Armenia went through a three-week Summer Telelevision Camp at a Seaside town Ureki(west Georgia) in July 2004 to further enhance their skills in TV production. The training was organized by Internews and facilitated by invited experts from Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In addition, within the framework of the project, a contest of one-minute PSAs on different topics was announced with the support of UNICEF to select the best scenarious from children aged 14-17. The one-minute videos have been produced based on the selected scenarious on healthy life-style, child rights etc. The first one-minute video on healthy lifestyle will be launched within the first TV programme “Our Express” today on Georgian Public TV.

“Our Express” is a three-year joint project of Internews Georgia, USAID and UNICEF aimed at enabling young people to express their concerns through media as well as at building their capacity in TV production.

Each programme will last 30 minutes and contain news blocks from each country with stories relevant to children and adolescents. Following the news blocks, a common theme will be examined for each country. This will enable young audiences in each country to see the similarities and differences within the Caucasus. The goal of this program is to create, via the powerful medium of television, an unprecedented contact among adolescents in the three Southern Caucasus countries of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

The programme focuses on instilling values in today’s youth, so they are equipped with the moral tools to help them guide the region’s future toward better-functioning democracies rooted in compassion and responsibility.

Our Express will start as a monthly production in Year one, move to production once every two weeks in Year two, and finally to weekly production in Year three.
