On June 7, 2012, the Public Defender of Georgia and the Center for Children and Women’s Rights at the Public Defender’s Office, in partnership with the Save the Children and with the support of Oxfam and UNICEF, organized the third annual conference – “The right of a child to be heard”. The conference aimed at increasing children’s involvement in decision-making process and at allowing children to express themselves on the issues of their interest. The conference was attended by the First Lady of Georgia, Vice Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Ministers of Education, Environment and Health.

The students of public schools from different regions of Georgia and members of the Child Advisory Body within the Public Defender’s Office made presentations about school self-governance, equal opportunities for all, environment protection and ecology, children’s health rights, and their participation in decision-making process. The conference gave students a possibility to highlight the issues of their concern and to bring them to the attention of the primary decision-makers, representatives of the relevant ministries.

The conference was also attended by the representatives of international and local non-governmental organizations, directors of public schools, teachers, and heads of state agencies.
