Humanitarian Response, Early recovery & Peace building efforts
Over 15 years of conflict and isolation has had a devastating impact upon all children in Abkhazia, including those in fragile return areas close to the administrative border line (ABL). The ‘pervasive atmosphere’ of violence, lost opportunities for normal childhood activities such as play and sport and the destruction and stagnation of health, education, youth and child protection services have contributed to an inter-generational cycle of tension and deprivation. Furthermore, the conflicts in early nineties and more recently in August 2008 over disputed territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia caused displacement of nearly 300,000 people, primarily ethnic Georgians, of which an estimated one third are children and youth. As a result delivery of basic social services is very limited. For example the majority of children under the age of five are not immunized against polio!
