NEW YORK, 3 November, 2004 - Response to a global study on Violence against Children has so far been excellent, according to the study’s leader.
Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, to lead the study, which is the first of its kind. It seeks to understand, prevent and reduce violence at a time when millions of children are trapped by it.
Mr. Pinheiro is leading a team which is engaging more than one hundred countries on issues ranging from the institutional treatment of juvenile offenders to violence against children in the home.
The study also aims to motivate countries to fulfil their obligations to protect children.Mr Pinheiro is pleased with the response so far.
“Large numbers of countries are seriously considering this matter, and this helps to demonstrate that the fight against violence against children must be an important priority,” he said.
Mr Pinheiro will present the study’s findings to the General Assembly in 2006.
