NEW YORK, 9 August 2004 – Beginning today, youth from around the globe will come together for a web dialogue on Voices of Youth, UNICEF’s interactive website for young people, to talk about their experiences with out-of-home living and care, the importance of trying to help children remain with their families when possible, and what they would like to see change.
The four-week dialogue is a collaboration between FICE Scotland, the Scottish Institute for Residential Childcare, Save the Children Scotland, Who Cares? Scotland and Voices of Youth. (FICE is the ‘Fédération Internationale des Communautés Educatives’, a non-governmental educational organization.) The web dialogue is part of the lead up to the FICE international young people's conference on out-of-home living, called ‘Creating a Place for Us’.
Youth delegates to the conference will join with their peers to discuss their thoughts, ideas and recommendations for ‘good care’. The summaries of their suggestions and reflections will be used to influence the agenda of the conference and the next steps for action.
The web dialogue is grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and will focus on questions around provision, protection and participation, as related to out-of-home care. We invite you to join in the discussions and to check out what young people are saying. Youth speak out!
