Main sequences: On the twentieth anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, UNICEF calls for universal salt iodization in the three countries worst affected by the accident: Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The number of children who developed thyroid cancer in the wake of the explosion could have been substantially lower if children had been consuming more iodine in their diets. Iodine deficiency is also responsible for brain damage in thousands of babies born in the region each year.
