Frequently Used Numbers for Polio Eradication:

  • Polio cases in 1988: 350,000 (1,000 per day)
  • Polio cases in 2005: 1,950
  • Polio endemic countries: four (the lowest ever number)
  • Per cent reduction in global cases since 1988: 99 per cent
  • Countries re-infected by Nigerian polio: 18 (including 15 in Africa and then Indonesia, Yemen and Saudia Arabia)
  • Countries re-infected since 2003: 21 (including Angola, Bangladesh & Nepal infected from India)
  • Reinfected countries with cases in 06: six (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Somalia, Nepal & Yemen)
