Esther Guluma took up her post as Regional Director of UNICEF for West and Central Africa (WCAR) in February 2006. The Regional Office is based in Dakar, Senegal.
Previously, Dr. Guluma served as UNICEF Deputy Regional Director for the South Asia Regional Office based in Katmandu, Nepal. Prior to that, she served as UNICEF Representative in Benin and the UNICEF Programme Officer in Liberia, Kenya and New York.
Prior to joining UNICEF, Dr. Guluma worked in Washington, DC, where she carried out a research project for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and as a consultant for USAID in Botswana. She worked prior to that in Monrovia, Liberia, where she spent almost three years (1988-1990) with USAID Liberia as Education Project Manager. From 1972 to 1987, she served in different capacities in the academic field at various institutions in Liberia, including the University of Liberia.
Dr. Esther Guluma is an Israeli national. She has a doctorate degree in Sociology from the University of Keele, England, and obtained her Master of Science degree in African Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1978.
