UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy, on behalf of UNICEFWe are grieved to hear of the apparent terrible death of humanitarian worker Margaret Hassan in Iraq, and we offer our sympathy to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Her brutal apparent execution underscores the fact that humanitarian workers are increasingly the target of those who seek to redress their grievances through violent acts.
UNICEF has also lost staff in Iraq. Personal security has become a fact of our work. We are no longer protected by the virtue of our work. Thus, our ability to help those truly in need becomes restricted with each death, injury and threat to our workers.”
