NEW YORK, 26 October 2004 - Princess Märtha Louise of Norway visited UNICEF headquarters here this week, where she was received by UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy.

The Princess has a long-standing personal commitment to children and development issues. She was named a Royal Patron of UNICEF Norway earlier this year.

"The first years that we grow up are actually the years we develop most in our entire life. It's the years where we learn the most, and if we manage to make that a safe start, then I think the world can also become a better place." said the Princess.

The Secretary-General of the Norwegian Committee for UNICEF, Kjersti Gjestvang, looks forward to working with the Princess on children's issues. "She's wholeheartedly engaged, particularly in issues of early childhood development and immunization; we call it the 'best start in life," she said.

During her visit, the Princess met with top UNICEF officials for a briefing on the organization's work around the world.

After the briefing, the Princess met the Scandinavian press. Norway, although a small country of 4.5 million people, is the largest per capita donor to UNICEF, and the Princess will play a key role in raising UNICEF's profile even further.
