Afin d'illustrer toute la diversité du travail de l'UNICEF, une sélection a été faite - qui figure ci-après - des leçons apprises par l'organisation et de ses innovations dans le domaine de la politique de sensibilisation et de la programmation. Ces exemples sont choisis parmi un grand nombre de programmes de coopération en cours d'exécution dans le monde.

Ces exemples, provenant de différentes zones géographiques, sont regroupés en cinq « Domaines d'action privilégiés » dans le Plan d'action stratégique à moyen terme pour 2006-2009 de l'UNICEF, qui a été approuvé par le Conseil exécutif : (1) Survie et développement du jeune enfant, (2) Éducation de base et égalité des sexes, (3) Le VIH/SIDA et les enfants, (4) Protection de l'enfant contre la violence et les mauvais traitements et (5) Plaidoyer et partenariats pour les droits des enfants. En outre, l'UNICEF intervient activement dans beaucoup de situations d'urgence ; on décrit dans un exemple certaines actions de l'UNICEF en réponse à la catastrophe du tsunami de 2004. Il est possible de trouver un certain nombre d'autres exemples, traitant notamment du VIH/SIDA, dans les sélections des années précédentes.
