Donor update - 24 November 2005
The Situation of "no war no peace' with neighboring Ethiopia and almost five consecutive years of drought continue to negatively affect the survival and development of children in Eritrea. Approximately two third of the population, or 2.3 million people, were in need of food assistance at the beginning of this year. The Global Acute Malntrtion (GAM) rate in children under five year ranges between 9 and 17 per cent. In some areas this requires a multi-sectoral response, yet 66 per cent of UNICEF's funding needs remain unmet. UNICEF urgently requires US$8.6 million to meet the needs of children and their families in the priority areas of health and nutrition, water and sanitation, education, protection and mine risk education.

Donor Update - 27 May 2005
Extreme drought conditions are causing high food insecurity, with an average of 15-20% of children under five and 40% of adult women malnourished throughout the country. 300,000 children and women are therefore in need of special feeding. Only 30% of the population have access to clean water.  90,000 people need to be supplied with emergency water trucking.  For these activities and others related to education, protection and mine risk education, UNICEF needs urgent funding since only 23% of the required funds have been received. Urgent requirements for water and sanitation, health and nutrition and child protection amount to $6,233,526.

Donor update - 14 December 2004
Sporadic and ill-distributed rains have contributed to the drought conditions in the country, with food insecurity, market instability and reduced access to potable water. UNICEF is greatly concerned over the sustained high levels of acute malnutrition among children and women; water shortages in most parts of the country; poor sanitation with only 3.6% of the population accessing improved sanitation facilities; and low school enrolment as over half of the primary school age children remain out of classrooms.
