Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) is one of the world's leading logistics groups. In 2006, DPWN developed a global alliance with UNICEF in the context of DPWN's existing cooperation with the United Nations. DPWN contributes logistical expertise and the commitment of highly trained and motivated employees to deliver help in the face of humanitarian need and disaster management.
In the context of the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility, DPWN partners with UNICEF through integrated approaches to undertake child health interventions in the developing world. Promoting the welfare of future generations is the main thrust behind DPWN's socially responsible business practices toward achieving one of the Millennium Development Goals: "Reducing Child Mortality" by 2015.
DPWN supports UNICEF programmes through corporate grants and employee fundraising initiatives. The company also provides in-kind assistance and employee volunteering at the national level on the ground in Kenya.
Corporate Engagement
Corporate social responsibility is a key factor in DPWN's business. In 2006, DPWN allied with UNICEF as part of the company's core sustainable development strategy.
The alliance with UNICEF was developed from DPWN's existing cooperation with the United Nations. In 2005, DPWN chose the United Nations as its partner for global humanitarian projects and works successfully with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the field of disaster management.
DPWN is committed to supporting the United Nation's humanitarian work by helping to reduce child mortality. In the case of disaster response, the great challenge is to reduce bottlenecks by using professional logistical skills. As the leading logistics provider worldwide, DPWN can provide solutions by ensuring that medicine, vaccines, and prophylaxes reach children and families in need more quickly.
DPWN follows the guidelines of the UN Global Compact. As a Global Compact member, the company considers society needs in their global business activities. The company follows a Code of Conduct that provides a binding ethical orientation for the business and the activities of its employees worldwide, and operates under a set of seven Corporate Values.
In-kind Assistance
In addition to global and national contributions, DPWN supports UNICEF programmes through in-kind assistance.
Distribution of 3.5 million bednets: DPWN's global cooperation with UNICEF began with a project in Kenya in response to an East African outbreak of infectious diseases including measles, polio, and malaria in the spring and summer of 2006. Children were the worst affected. Comprehensive medical care of children and their families, including those in remote and inaccessible areas presented significant logistical challenges. In July and September 2006, DPWN's logistics subsidiary DHL responded by facilitating the distribution of approximately 3.5 million mosquito insecticide treated bednets to children under the age of five, to whom malaria is often fatal. In Kenya, mass distributions of this kind are only able to take place once every four or five years. As a result of this collaboration with UNICEF, DHL plans to extend its network to include remote areas in Kenya for access to as many children as possible in the future.
Medical Logistics Analysis: DPWN's funding will also support additional long-term measures including strengthening routine immunisation in Kenya's Kwale District by improving the logistics chain of medicines and vaccines and increasing full immunisation coverage rates among infants from 59% to 90%.
Therefore, as a first step in 2006, DPWN has conducted a medical logistics analysis throughout the whole of Kenya's Kwale district. To contribute to the sustainable improvement of child health care in the district, two DHL expert volunteers analyzed the existing logistics chain for medicines and vaccines, for example the storage and distribution of heat-sensitive vaccines. The results of this analysis will enable recommendations that may form the basis for further in-kind support in 2007-2008.

Employee Giving
In December 2006, DPWN launched an employee donation and fundraising campaign that enables all its employees to actively support UNICEF by making individual donations, taking part in global fundraising events and serving as volunteers in the field.
Under the motto "We deliver help!" the donation campaign was specially designed for DPWN. The first highlight of the fundraising campaign was the worldwide DPWN designated 'UNICEF week' from 11- 22 December 2006 during which employees were encouraged to hold their own fundraising events for UNICEF projects. DPWN employees raised Euros 170,000 for DPWN's supported programme in Kenya.
DPWN employees are also able to support the UNICEF partnership as employee volunteers. In 2006, ten DPWN employees from a various departments and regions travelled to Kenya for two weeks as field volunteers. They assisted health staff in hospitals in weighting children, distributing bednets and documenting the coverage of the various interventions given during the outreach Child Health Action Days. The volunteers also supported the hospital painting project.
